Is there a symbolic meaning to wearing the jubba?

I like Islamic and Middle Eastern clothing, and I recently bought a jubba coat. A friend from India tells me that there's a specific meaning to wearing the jubba, but I haven't found anything online that indicates this; as far as I know, it's just a long plain coat. Would I be making a statement inadvertently by wearing this?
