What is IUI and what are the qualifications for it?

I keep hearing abut IUI when TTC. What exactly is IUI and whats the process step by step? and would I qualify for it? I had an ectopic pregnancy recently and lost my left tube. My right one is still good AS FAR AS THEY KNOW. SHould I try on my own for awhile first?
